Infinior MicroSystems' IMS16E® is a 16bit high performance microprocessor core which is 100% software compatible with the Intel 8086/80186® microprocessor. IMS16E is designed using CISC(Complex Instruction Set Computer) Architecture. It consists of two-stage pipeline, EU and BIU. The EU is responsible for instruction execution and effective address calculations. The BIU performs all bus cycles and maintains the instruction queue. The industry-standard 80C186 and 80C188 microcontroller finishes 1 bus cycle with 4 clock cycles (t1, t2, t3, t4). The IMS16E reduces 4 clock cycles to 3 clock cycles (t1, t2, t3) for 1 bus cycle. The IMS16E microprocessor core can be configured either 80C186 word mode or 80C188 byte mode.

IMS16E has been designed in synthesizable HDL code and can be configured with variety of on-chip memories and peripherals. Compared to the existing 16bit microcontrollers, the IMS16E enables system designers to reduce the size, power consumption, and cost of embedded systems, while increasing functionality and performance. Development environments are also widely available.
